In the early 1940’s as hostilities began to flare up in Western Europe, the US Army put the word out to all automobile manufacturers that they were searching for a light reconnaissance vehicle to replace motorcycle and sidecar combinations traditionally used for messages and advance reconnaissance. Of 135 companies approached only 3 companies pitched. The ‘jeep’ was the only solution that met power specifications and was subsequently selected. Soon after its inception into the army, the General Purpose Vehicle was nicknamed the ‘jeep’ and a legend was born. 60 years later, the Jeep brand is a globally recognised symbol of freedom and rugged adventure.
