By the latter half of the 1950s, Leonard Lord, Chairman of the British Motor Corporation, had become convinced of the need for a new kind of small car. In 1957 he commissioned engineer Alec Issigonis to develop a prototype. Just seven months later a prototype was up and running. This was given the ‘thumbs up’ and the market launch of the Mini took place in August 1959.
